Checking for updates - why do I get dire warnings from Windows?
How do I get past those messages and succeed in installing my updates?
Explain by example and screenshots.
Lets say you are downloading IGP6-Group3. Windows will display a dialog box which says:
IGP6-Group3-dl.exe this program is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer
The dialog box has 2 action buttons - DELETE and Actions
Select Actions. Gives two bad choices (again!) - delete or cancel. Look for the LITTLE button "more options". Click this.
Choose the option - Run anyway”. Proceed and choose the option to SAVE the download.
After the Check for updates program closes in Ideas Genie, go back to windows downloads and Run the saved download file to install rthe updates. Easy!
Is it possible to ask for the currently open database (or fileset) to be re-opened next time the program is started.
This feature is hidden when Ideas Genie is initially installed. The feature can be activated as follows:
- Start Preferences-GA698
- Check the check box Advanced User
- Start GA626-Open another database
- Look for checkbox with the Caption Make this my START UP folder
(This is hidden in Basic mode, shown in Advanced User mode)
- Check this then click Open
- Close Ideas Genie
- Restart Ideas Genie
You don’t need to use OPEN when you start Ideas Genie.
When typing into a data field, why does the cursor stop just before the last digit and beep?
This means you’ve reached the end of the data field (number of characters max has been reached).
This program behavior prevents you overtyping into the next field, since that can wipe out any info in the next field.
Tip: Make sure you don’t have leading spaces at the beginning of the data you have typed. This can happen when you click into the middle of a field and start typing.
e.g. If a field allows 8 characters max, and you have three spaces at the beginning, then you will be restricted to typing 5 characters after the spaces.
